Are you looking to inject a little peace and quiet into this year’s Christmas scene?
There are a lot of reasons to look forward to Christmas, but for most people, shopping isn’t one of them. Even if you enjoy heading out into the shopping malls and plazas, searching for just the right gift for your loved ones, it can be a challenge.
That’s why one of the best gifts you can give yourself this year is to get your Christmas shopping done a little early.
That’s right – as soon as Labor Day is in the rear view mirror, plan to open up your pocket book. Make a list of all the people for whom you need to buy gifts. Be like Santa Claus and check it twice. Did you perhaps forget a fellow employee? That long lost cousin you just started exchanging cards with?
Once you’ve got your list done, put a holiday gift idea next to each name on it. If you’re shopping for children, add several ideas. Don’t be Scrooge. It’s better to have a lot of options.
And then start shopping. Christmas shopping can certainly be done online. In fact, lots of online retailers start to advertise holiday specials as soon as Halloween is over. Some are thinking Christmas even before trick or treating. The reason? They’re testing markets, seeing what’s going to sell and what isn’t. Be savvy. You can clean up if you’re smart about where you shop.
And don’t feel like you’re best or only option is to be chained to a computer monitor. You don’t have to click your way through the stores. If you’re a brick-and-mortar shopper, why not head to the mall? Go early in the week when most shoppers are staying at home. As you wander freely down the aisles, finding everything you need, remind yourself that what you’re doing is real live Christmas shopping.
Feels pretty good doesn’t it?
Some people will complain that shopping early means you lose out on the holiday magic. Where are the Christmas decorations? The holiday cheer? The Salvation Army volunteers ringing their bells? The nativity scenes?
Don’t think of it that way. Think of the crowds that you’re not battling with. Think about the shelves that are empty because somebody got there before you.
And when Christmas does come, and all you have to do is wrap the gifts you bought months earlier, pour yourself a mug of hot chocolate and have a sugar cookie. You’ll feel plenty festive.
